The metal mandrels, which are bought seperatly in sets of six, slot into the told of the bassoon mandrel handle and are secured by a constricting screw system.
Being able to change the mandrels over means that you can leave the bassoon reeds todry on the mandrels; if you had to take the reeds off as with a normal bassoon madrel you can damage the base or tipof the reed when trying to remove it.
